How One Team Used the Team Challenge to Achieve Success

Define Your Why for Increased Motivation and Long-Term Success

Many have goals to lose weight and improve their health to start the New Year, but after a few months of obstacles they have already “fallen off the bandwagon.” On the other hand, others are able to almost effortlessly change their unhealthy lifestyle habits for continued weight improvement success. When push comes to shove and obstacles are present, are you staying on track?

If you are having trouble staying motivated towards your health improvements, then you might need to redefine why you want to make these changes.  You are battling against the ugly forces of habit, so your why for change needs be resilient. It needs to fight the little voice in your head telling you to quit and give up or give in to unhealthy temptations. It might help to think back to a behavior change you have made in the past to help you succeed now. What was the driving force towards that behavior change and how can it help you today? Finding your why is a matter of looking inward rather than outward. Dig deep and ask yourself, why do you want to be healthier? It’s probably going to be more than to look good in a bathing suit or because somebody else told you to lose weight.

Write Down Your Why

notepadTake a few minutes today and really explore why you want to be a healthier version of yourself.  Once you have identified your why, write it down into an actual sentence on a notecard. On days when you just don’t feel like being active or choosing nutritious foods, that notecard can give you the motivation and drive you need for long-term success. Only by being completely dedicated to your why will you have the motivation you will need to achieve your goals. If you have a strong enough reason for wanting to change your body, then you can!  Just make sure to keep reminding yourself of your reason, especially when times get tough or when you start finding excuses to justify unhealthy actions.

My why that drives me to stay healthy is so I can be physically fit enough to do the things I love as I get older, like hiking in Colorado. Why to Stick to the Outer Aisles of Your Local Grocery Store

Take a moment to visualize your local grocery store. Chances are the fruits, vegetables, meat, seafood, dairy and fresh bread sections are all located around the outside perimeter of the store. Sounds like you could make some pretty healthy meals out of these items, right? These fresh foods are generally healthier than most of the items found in the center aisles so this is where you will want to concentrate most of your shopping. When looking at the food choices in the interior aisles they tend to be characterized as “pantry” foods which are typically pre-packaged and more heavily processed to withstand a longer shelf life. However, there are still some instances where it is ok to venture into the inside aisles.

Grocery Store Blog PostAside from finding the most nutrient rich foods, when you stick to the outer perimeter of the store this will also help you avoid any impulse snack buys you tend to purchase when you walk down the center cookie aisle, for example. You may also find that you are more likely to try new healthy foods and incorporate them into a recipe that you’ve wanted to try!

A Heart-Healthy Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, we are talking about hearts: both the romantic and literal kind. This Valentine’s Day, try focusing on taking care of your heart by not only expressing your love but also making some healthier choices to make you stronger and healthier.

Don’t be Seduced by Unhealthy Meals: Instead of flirting with sugary and fatty temptations, show your love that you care by cooking a heart-healthy meal that is not only simple but also delicious. Check out our Pinterest board for some heart-healthy recipes.

Get Active for 30 Minutes: Before going out for the traditional dinner and movie night, get active with your partner by going for a walk or doing a partner workout. If you are looking for extra motivation to stay active and healthy this year, then I encourage you to unite with others throughout Colorado in the Weigh and Win ‘Spring Into Action’ Team Challenge! Joining a team has been shown to boost success, maximize individual strengths, minimize barriers and boost enjoyment. That’s right; weight improvement isn’t only an enjoyable experience but it can be a lasting lifestyle change for the future!

Teamwork has been calculated as ‘one plus one equals three.’  It is true that many can find success in improving their health on their own; however, with the additional support of a team some are able to accomplish even more than they could by themselves. This concept of synergy or collaboration is how teams achieve success. Think about it, even Payton Manning can’t win championships all on his own!

Results show that a typical, successful Weigh and Win participant loses an average of 17.7 pounds over a one year period. A successful member in the Team Challenge loses an average of 20.3 pounds and a team captain loses 22.3 pounds. By teaming up with others in the Weigh and Win program, you can work with like-minded participants towards a common goal of weight improvement and better health.

Individual weaknesses can be minimized through the efforts of a team. The motivation to stick to healthy lifestyle changes, such as eating better quality foods and getting more sleep, can be troublesome for those beginning. The good news is, overtime small changes become habit and finding motivation once you have habits in place is usually less of an issue.  Until then, having the support of friends and family members is vital to reach success. In the Team Challenge, you have email access to communicate with other team members that might be able to offer you support and guidance in the areas you are seeking help. Of course you always have access to your Weigh and Win Health Coaches via email and phone, but you might find that talking to a teammate that is in the same position as you can be truly empowering.

The fun factor of friendly competition against other teams throughout Colorado is also shown to keep participants engaged for success. Studies show that joining a team can reduce the stress that we tend to put on ourselves in individual circumstances. Also many of us are competitive by nature so we enjoy a little competition with others. At your worksite, see if you can create multiple teams for friendly competition at work!

Weigh and Win “Spring into Action” Team Challenge

February 1 – April 30, 2015

DENVER, Jan. XX, 2015 – On Feb. 1, 2015, Coloradans will “Spring into Action” with the semiannual Weigh and Win Team Challenge. Teams comprised of four to eight people will compete across the state in two categories: average percentage of weight lost and HEALTHpoints accrued (earned for program participation).

All team members must weigh-in at least twice between Feb. 1 and April 30. The 2014 ‘Winter Weigh-Off’ Team Challenge consisted of 121 teams.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams in both categories, as will a $1,000 charitable donation to each winning team. Past recipients include American Cancer Society, Boys & Girls Club of Metro Denver, Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, Food Bank of the Rockies and Habitat for Humanity.

“I’m a single mom, I don’t have the money to donate myself,” said Weigh and Win 2014 ‘Winter Weigh-off’ Challenge winner Desiree Amaro. “Being able to make that big of a donation was sincerely rewarding.”

The average weight improvement for a successful Weigh and Win participant after one year in the program is 17.7 pounds or an 8 percent weight loss. For those who simply participate in the Team Challenge, the average weight lost is 16 percent more than a general Weigh and Win participant, while a Team Challenge captain loses an average of 26 percent more weight.

“The Team Challenge is a great way to engage in the program while motivating your friends and family to join you,” said Lia Schoepke, Weigh and Win Program Manager. “The team-based structure provides extra motivation and the charitable donation adds an additional incentive.”

What motivated you to join Weigh and Win?

I was jealous of the success my roommate was having. He was being paid to lose weight, not too sure how that isn’t incentive enough!

What were your goals when you started the program?

My goal when I started the program was to maintain my weigh. I wanted to shed pounds in the long term, but I wanted to at least maintain my weight, so I could achieve one goal before going headlong into the others.

Why has Weigh and Win worked for you?

Weigh and Win worked for me because the program automatically sends follow-up emails with meal tips, exercise ideas, and many other great ideas. In a way, it was like I had a personal trainer/dietitian with me at all times.  I loved the fact you had real time progress updates and the system took before and after photos for you as well. That was probably the best part.

Do you have any tips or advice for new participants to Weigh and Win?

I have one short tip for all new Weigh and Win participants. DO NOT GIVE UP. It’s tough, it’s difficult, but the quickest way to failure is giving up. Keep your head up if your diet or exercise routine doesn’t go as planned for period of time. Stop, don’t beat yourself up, and jump back into that routine and I promise you’ll be raking in the dough with Weigh and Win.

What motivated you to join Weigh and Win?

A few years ago, I saw a television commercial about the program. I had weight to lose and thought a program could give me the jump start I needed. I figured since it was free; I should go ahead and sign up!

What do you like about the Weigh and Win Program?

I really enjoy the quarterly weigh-ins and the photo taken at the time of weighing in. Having a visual is really helpful and motivational and acts as a picture diary to record one’s progress. Because I am actually living my journey, I often don’t recognize the changes that are happening to me as I am working toward my weight loss goal.

I appreciate the body weight loss and body mass index (B.M.I.) percentage tracking. The combination of this data and the picture offer comprehensive information that is very motivating and challenges you to keep going.

Nyree’s 3 Tips for Success:

1. Don’t procrastinate! – Sign-up and get started immediately. After I signed up, I waited several months before I took action. The sooner you take action; the sooner you can reach your goal!

2. Don’t listen to the naysayers (even if it is yourself) –  This time can be different and you can actually lose weight even if you have tried multiple times in the past. Ignore those that may try to discourage you and surround yourself with those that are willing to support you.

3. Don’t quit! – Put in effort and you will reap the rewards of a healthier you. It may take a while but consistency is key and you must believe you can succeed.
